CHAPTER 7

Amanda sat on the couch leaning forward and fidgeting with her fingers. Her mind still struggling to accept the harrowing events, which she had experienced in that dark alley. The explanation Fenris had given her had done little to help her to hold onto some sense of reality. As real as everything had been, her brain still refused to acknowledge the situation that she now found herself in. One minute she believed everything, the next, it all sounded ridiculous.

Even though Fenris had given her some of the answers she sought, it hadn’t stopped the same questions bombarding her brain again and again. Why her? Where was she to go? How would she live? Would Fenris be able to keep her safe? Who or what exactly was Fenris? There was obviously a lot more to him than he was saying, but he wasn’t talking.

She still didn’t know anything about the man who had saved her, but one way or another he was part of this new world her eyes had been opened up to. Her world had been literally turned upside down during the last few hours and she was unable to fully come to terms as to the reasons why.

Eventually, she came to the inevitable conclusion that she had to try to get a hold on things and restore some order of calm to her mind. Unbelievable as the situation seemed, it was frighteningly real. No amount of wishing or hoping was going to erase the events of the night, or change her current circumstances.

Crying or feeling sorry for herself, was not going to help with the position that she found herself in. It was what it was and the sooner she focused on what to do instead of what had already happened, the better it was going to be, even though a part of her felt that she had every reason to feel more than a little aggrieved at her predicament.

The only positive in the whole thing was that she had someone to help her. She shuddered at the thought of having to cope with this on her own. Fenris may be a mystery, but she couldn’t ignore the fact that he had come to her rescue. There was no choice but to place her entire trust in him. Not only for his timely appearance in the alley, but also because there was nobody else to whom she could turn to.

Amanda heard a loud rap on the door; she froze. Then she heard Fenris’s voice asking her to open the door. With a sigh of relief she jumped up and let him in.

“We have to leave now,” he said, urgently.

“Okay,” Amanda replied as she picked up a medium-sized backpack and a small cage in which Samson sat looking less than pleased at being cooped in such a tight space.

“What are you doing?” asked Fenris.

“What do you mean?”

“You’re taking that?” Fenris asked, incredulously, pointing at the cage.

“He isn’t a that, he’s Samson. Of course I’m taking him, he’s all I’ve got,” she snapped back.
